Focused attention, ethical suggestion, and safe practice foundations
The science and practical foundations of consensual hypnosis — what hypnosis is and is not, how expectations and focused attention shape responsiveness, why hypnotizability varies, the structure of a responsible non-clinical session, induction and intensification principles, observable hypnotic phenomena, clear suggestion design, self-hypnosis, reorientation, debriefing, and the evidence behind competing theories. Consent, honest framing, and participant control come first. The skill explicitly rejects covert influence, “mind control,” recovered-memory work, and exaggerated medical claims; clinical treatment, diagnosis, trauma work, pain suppression, and work with vulnerable people belong only with appropriately licensed professionals operating within their scope. Multiple-choice practice can build knowledge and judgment, but it cannot assess live delivery, replace supervised practice, or make anyone a certified hypnotist or hypnotherapist. Distinct from Psychology (the broad science), Paranormal Claims (testing extraordinary claims), Persuasion (ethical influence outside hypnosis), and Mindfulness (non-reactive awareness).
